Detroit-Wayne Crisis Intervention Team 40-hour training application for participation
The CIT Model promotes strong community partnerships among law enforcement, behavioral health providers, people with mental and substance use disorders, along with their families and others. The arrest rate for recipients of public mental health services is estimated to be 4.5 times that of the general public. The goal of Detroit-Wayne County’s CIT program is to support recipients of behavioral health services and the safety of first responders.
CIT is a program that provides the foundation necessary to promote community and statewide solutions to assist individuals with a mental illness and/or addictions. The CIT Model reduces both stigma and the need for further involvement with the criminal justice system (CIT International).
We are looking to protect the integrity and standards of our program. We follow the Memphis Model and the Core Elements of CIT. CIT is based on the idea that experienced officers who volunteer are best at responding to mental illness calls. For this reason, we have an application process that must be completed prior to allowing participation in courses hosted by our team.
*The 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course is a prerequisite
*Applicants must have one year post academy experience
